Did you know the most important thing you can do outside of keeping your kids alive and healthy is to read to them? Research has shown that reading to children every day (even after they can read on their own) is the number one thing we can do to help them become successful readers. It grows their vocabulary, comprehension skills, and background knowledge in a way that can’t be replicated anywhere else.

Even older kids who are “too cool to be read to” still need to spend at least 30-60 minutes a day reading. Studies are showing that we are losing children around fourth grade when it comes to reading for fun. It’s so important for them to continue reading on their own for fun to help their future academic success.

To help encourage reading this summer, here are four fun Summer Reading Programs for Jefferson Parish Kids, where kids and even adults can earn prizes by either being read to or reading on their own!
